When Chester fires his gun in the air to see if it's working, a man falls dead. Only an old Montana law saves Chester from the gallows : the survivor of a gun duel is responsible for the debts and the dependents of the victim . Chester finds himself working days on the farm of the amorous and crotchety widow Hawkins (Main) and her six unruly children and working nights at the town saloon to pay off a debt to the sinister Jake Frame (Gordon Jones).
Just when it seems that no one would dare shoot Chester - because they don't want to assume his dreadful duties - he's appointed shrriff. Swaggering into his new role, Chester manages to clean up Wagon Gap, but not before a hilarious incident with a frog in his soup. It's action and laughs in this delightful frontier farce.
