Catch 22
by
Joseph Heller
Recommended by Joshua Packard
I find absurdities being defended as sound principle all the time.
Many of mine and my friends spoken observations of the world were
similar to Heller's style. I find myself writing satire all the
time, I found Catch-22 appealing originally at the comical absurdities
of the events and character's actions. As I read on, and realized
more, it was far from funny. The satire is a useful way to expose
the absurd and circular reasoning, at least it's the only way to keep
sane and laugh while your resisting such absurdities in the world.
Lasting relationship with this book forever. I'll probably read
Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse Five, which I hear is similar.

The Jungle: The Uncensored Original Edition
by
Upton Sinclair,
Kathleen De Grave,
Earl Lee (Introduction)
Recommended by Joshua Packard
Muckraking novel about the exploitation of laborers in the beginning of
the century, and the labor movement towards unions. Sad how people
think issues like these are history, not significant today. And
then people only pay attention to the unsanitary meat!! The book
wasn't about meat!!! Read it, this is the uncensored version, took
decades and decades to be released. I haven't finished reading it
yet, but it's an engrossing account.
